Originally the Buffalo Club. 321 Blende Street was the home of the Grand Lodge of England (GLE Ltd). Opened as the Buffalo Club, in 1914, It was lost to the Brothers by bad management and corruption.

To keep the Buffalo Club viable the Buffs let in non-members who eventually took over. As the Buffs gradually thinned out it was decided to grant open membership.

The Board called for suggestions for a new name for the club. The following suggestions were submitted:

  • The Broken Hill Sportsman’s Club,
  • The Civic Club,
  • The Broken Hill Sturt Club,
  • The Tatts Club
  • The Ozone Club.

All names were submitted to a ballot and on the 18th February 1945 the name of the club was officially changed to The Broken Hill Sturt Club. AW Edwards, the Vice-Chairman at the time, suggested altering the name to Broken Hill Sturt Club, in conformity with the changing of the Central Reserve to Sturt Park. Sadly, Mr Edwards passed away shortly after the name change.
